Scheduling regular dental examinations allows you to take a preventive approach to preserve the wellness of your teeth. A routine oral exam at Awesome Smiles diagnoses dental decay, periodontal disease, oral cancer, and various other issues that could be affecting your dental and general health. Typically offered at biannual teeth cleaning appointments, dental exams enable Dr. Tracy Provenghi to evaluate the teeth, gum tissues, bite position, jawbone, and various other oral checkpoints and will allow for the early diagnosis and care of oral concerns. To keep up with the health and beauty of your teeth, set up a comprehensive dental exam at our El Paso, TX practice!

There are many benefits to dental exams, including:

  • Catching dental conditions early on before they develop further
  • More treatment options available for dental concerns
  • Evaluation of existing dental restorations
  • Improved overall dental and oral health
  • Early intervention for gum disease
  • Less money spent on more invasive treatments

Oral exams at Awesome Smiles begin with an overview of your dental history. A team member might also review any oral issues or aesthetic smile goals you have to discover more about your overall dental wellness. During specific routine appointments, a set of digital x-rays may be ordered to provide our team with greater insight into the health of your teeth and jawbone. We may then conduct a screening for cancer of the mouth, evaluate the evenness of your arches and jaws, and assess your teeth for trauma, as well as the comfort of any dental appliances. A periodontal exam could also be done to look for existing areas of gum disease.

About Us
Do dental exams hurt?

No, they don't. During a dental exam, Dr. Provenghi will use special tools to examine your teeth and gums but she takes care to ensure you're comfortable throughout the procedure. Some people with sensitive teeth or inflamed gums may find the dental cleaning after the exam somewhat uncomfortable, but it typically isn't painful unless a serious dental or oral health issue is present, and if so, the procedure can be postponed.

What is a dental exam checking for?

A dental exam checks your teeth for decay, damage, and cavities, your gums for signs of gingivitis or gum disease, the state of any dental restorations, and other oral health concerns. Dr. Provenghi will also check for symptoms of oral cancer and check your jaw for signs of TMJ/TMD.

How long does a dental exam usually take?

It depends on your oral health and if any problems are discovered. However, on average, most dental exams (including the cleaning) take about 45 minutes to complete. If Dr. Provenghi needs to perform diagnostic testing (such as an x-ray), it may take a bit longer.

How often should I have a dental exam?

According to the ADA (American Dental Association), people with average oral health should get a dental exam twice a year. People with oral health concerns or certain health issues like chronic diseases (diabetes, heart disease, etc.) may need more frequent dental examinations. Dr. Provenghi will examine your teeth and gums and create a dental exam schedule to help you achieve the best oral health.
